Clay Ryan serves as Vice Chancellor for Governmental Affairs and Special Counsel for The University of Alabama System, where he coordinates federal, state, and local governmental affairs for The University of Alabama, UAH, UAB, and the UAB Health System.  Prior to joining the System, Clay chaired the Governmental and Regulatory Affairs practice group at Maynard, Cooper & Gale, one of the Southeast’s leading law firms.

Clay received his J.D. with honors from The University of Alabama School of Law and holds a B.A. degree, also with honors, from Birmingham-Southern College.  He is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham and has been recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” and Yellowhammer News’ “Power & Influence 50.”  He has served a board member of Glenwood Autism & Behavioral Health Center and as chair of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama’s Roundtable.

Clay is the proud dad of his incomparable daughter, Abigail, who has 5 national championships to her credit in her 10 years on earth and innumerable broken hearts on the way in the next few years.

Why have you decided to serve as a Torchbearer for the JLB?
1. Who can say no to Lindsey Tanner?
2. Ford Wiles asked me to, and he makes me feel hip when I’m around him (no small feat).
3. The Junior League of Birmingham has made an immeasurable difference in our community and in the lives of women and girls for 100 years, and I can think of no greater honor than playing a small part in the continuation of their work.

What/who inspires you to be a Light in our community?
My girl Abigail.  Most everything I do is with an eye toward making her proud of me and trying to help her live the best life she can.  Supporting the work of the Junior League of Birmingham accomplishes both.  I am thankful for the opportunity.
